Commuters Spend Nearly Three Weeks Stuck In Traffic On The M1 Each Year

Think of all the things you could do in 19 days.

That's how long commuters who make the trip from the Gold Coast up to Brisbane during peak hour each day, are spending just driving to and from work across the whole year.

The RACQ crunched the numbers, finding motorists spent roughly 465 hours making the journey.

"That's almost three weeks, which is pretty shocking," said spokesperson Lucinda Ross.

Drivers can save themselves a lot of time behind the wheel, if they can avoid travelling during rush hour.

"You could save yourself six days in a year of time that you otherwise would have spent stuck in traffic, so it really is important to travel in those off-peak periods, to take public transport wherever you can and reduce the time you're sitting in gridlock," she said.

The motoring body was calling for better investment in infrastructure across South East Queensland, before the problem got any worse.

"We know the south east is a very fast-growing region and it's only going to continue which is why we really need to see that investment," said Ms Ross.
