A Sydney father has been released without charge after being questioned over the death of a home intruder.

The 44-year-old woke to find a man standing in the living room of his Harrington Park home on Sunday morning around 7:30am, when they got into a scuffle.

The would-be-thief collapsed but was unable to be revived, despite efforts to perform CPR on the man.

Police are now waiting on post-mortem and toxicology results to determine the cause of death as investigations continue.
