Triple M's Damian Barrett has criticised the match review officer's refusal to grade the David Mackay clash with Hunter Clark prior to sending it to the tribunal, saying it has only "added to (the) confusion".

Mackay was sent directly to the tribunal on Thursday night for a clash with Clark that left him with multiple fractures in his jaw.

The length of a ban for Mackay - if he receives one at all - is well and truly up in the air, and Barrett believes the MRO is at fault.

"I think that's part of the confusion too, Bill," he explained on Triple M's Rush Hour.

"They, the match review officer, refused to grade it when they sent it to the tribunal, and to me that has added to this confusion.

"They weren't prepared to put their own ruling on it publicly before they sent it to the tribunal. I thought it was a really poor look, because the match review office, Bill, is the law-making body within the AFL.

"I don't have an issue with Steven Hocking - if it is indeed Steven Hocking - who's pushed it through to the tribunal this way.

"But I did have a significant problem with there being no grading initially, and also too to not have the responsibility to put your name and your organisation and your body to the events pertaining to Mackay hitting Clark."
