Dennis Cometti says he has a "lot of sympathy" for Jesse Hogan in the wake of the news he will miss round one.

DENNIS COMETTI REACTS:

Hogan, who has battled testicular cancer as well as the death of his father over the past two years, will miss round one after Fremantle confirmed he was dealing with anxiety, leading him to make "poor decisions around alcohol consumption".

The 24-year-old was plucked out of Perth at 17, selected by Melbourne via the mini-draft a year before he was eligible.

While he said there was no chance of it happening, Cometti pondered whether players were being drafted too young, saying he has "a lot of sympathy" for Hogan's situation.

"We're drafting some of these blokes too young," he told Clairsy, Matt & Kymba.

"At 17, to be a player who's going to an AFL club, it's very difficult if you're separated from your family, and I think a lot of that happens.

"I've got a lot of sympathy for Hogan."
