Dog Euthanased After Mayfield Attack

The dog which attacked a toddler at Mayfield has been put down.

The Great Dane mauled Tom Higgins on Tuesday night, after running through an open gate.

The three year old was riding his bike along Antill Street at the time, with his mum and older sister.

He suffered serious bite wounds and has undergone surgery in John Hunter Hospital to reattach part of his ear.

A Newcastle City Council spokesperson has told KOFM the dog was voluntarily surrendered by its owner yesterday and has since been euthanased.

Investigations continue into the incident.
