Dozens of anti-lockdown protesters were arrested and fined for breaches of the Chief Health Officers directions in Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Officers swarmed the rally hotspot around Flinders Street Station after people took to the streets in a furore over the lockdown extension.

73 people were arrested with 69 of those charged or issued with fined over breaches of health directions.

"Police had a highly visible presence in the CBD and were pleased that the majority of Victorians did the right thing and stayed home," a police statement said.

Lord mayor Sally Capp told 7, although she doesn’t agree with the actions of protesters, she understands there are a lot of emotions at stake right now for Melbournians.

"There's anger, there's fear, there's desperation. Lockdown six, I think has been six times tougher and of course it’s now extended for another week"

Meantime, the State Government are set to announce businesses support which may come too late for some.

Sally Capp said there's fear and anger amongst business owners and the greater community

"We're in lockdown to save lives, but at the same time livelihoods are being destroyed and we're really hoping that if everybody does the right thing, then we get out of lockdown six and into bounce back six as quickly as possible"

- LM Sally Capp
