Olympic legend Raelene Boyle has praised Mack Horton for not standing on the podium with Sun Yang at the world championships, hitting out at ASADA, WADA and the IOC for not taking action.

Boyle won an Olympic silver medal in 1968 in the 200 metres before winning two more in Munich in 1972 at the 100 and 200 metres, both behind East German Renate Stecher.

The East German athletes were later revealed to have been part of a state-sponsored doping program, with anabolic steroids banned three years later.

She told Triple M's Hot Breakfast on Tuesday morning that she was proud of Horton for taking a stance against Sun Yang, who she labelled a "drug cheat".

"I was actually quite proud of him, personally," he said.

"It's about time someone took a stance and made it visible to the world rather than invisible.

"Why would you get on the dais next to a drug cheat?

"Good on him. Pat him on the back."
