A rather ominous red haze has hung low over Sydney this morning, with large amounts of dust making for foggy skies across the city.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the dust band stretches almost to the QLD border.

It is set to clear out of Sydney by this afternoon.

Temperatures around Sydney will be a lot cooler today after yesterday's heatwave, with the CBD set for 26C with tops of 30C in Penrith.

This is a stark comparison to yesterday's temperatures in the 40s.
