Eddie McGuire believes the threat of COVID-19 will have significant ramifications for the upcoming footy season, with the possibility of games pushed back or played in front of no crowds.

Following on from the news surrounding the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Eddie extrapolated on Triple M's Hot Breakfast on what it means for the next sport on the radar.

"That means the footy will be shut," he said.

"They can't just stop the Grand Prix and have the footy in front of 90,000 on Thursday (and) 50,000 on Friday."

He ran through a couple of possibilities for what could lie ahead.

"The three options are business as usual this week - I reckon that's been blown up just then," he explained.

"(Either that or) we play without crowds, or push the season back a couple of weeks."
