The Hot Breakfast’s Eddie McGuire says that the West Gate Tunnel project may be delayed by soil contamination.

“I’m getting some very big information coming through that in the West Gate Tunnel project at the moment that there is massive contaminated soil issues that are starting to rise,” Ed said.

“I understand it’s a product called P-FAS… It’s a byproduct of fire retardant foam that has apparently leeched it’s way through the soil all along Footscray Road area.

“The information is there’s no safe levels of exposure to this stuff… my mail is it could cause a major slowdown to the project because the EPA can’t advise where to put the contaminated soil to make it safe.”

P-FAS — short for Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid — is pollutant that has been used in items like Scotchgard, firefighting foams and aviation hydraulic fluids.

The West Gate Tunnel project is expected to be completed in 2022.
