The writing may have been on the wall for Holden but yesterday's news that General Motors would be retiring the iconic brand in Australia and New Zealand still came as a shock, said motorsport correspondent Jon Thompson.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, GM revealed that they had conducted an "exhaustive analysis" but that long-term investment in Holden would not deliver an appropriate return.

Interestingly, most questions at the press conference were from motorsport journalists asking the one question that seems to be on everyone's lips: What does this mean for Supercars?

Despite the initial shock after yesterday's announcement, Thompson says, we really should have seen the news coming.

Sales of the classic Aussie brand have plummeted in recent years, and the difference between last year's numbers and that of Toyota, Hyundai and Mazda are staggering.
