Wayne Bennett today has stepped away from his Origin coaching duties after returning to the position at the eleventh hour last year to coach Queensland.

Bennett, 71, led the Maroons to an unlikely series victory last November and speaking exclusively to Dobbo on Rush Hour Queenslander shot down speculation that his relationship with the QRL had fractured, telling listeners that the split was beyond amicable.

“ My relationship with the QRL couldn’t be stronger…  We had a discussion in early December and I told them then and there that there was no grey areas with me and whilst they would’ve liked me to stay on they understood my position.”

Bennett, 71, cited focusing his all his attention on winning a premiership with South Sydney. His departure leaves the Maroons top job vacant with former Cowboys premiership coach Paul Green the front-runner to fill the void. However, Bennett told Dobbo that there is a flaw in his credentials.
