It's a YES from a small Eyre Peninsula community to a radioactive waste dump.

Kimba residents have backed one for their region following a postal ballot.

Two properties near the town are on a Federal Government short list... along with some land near the Flinders Ranges.

396 voted in favour - while 294 voted against it.

The full results were posted on Kimba Council's website.

The facility will store low and medium-level waste currently being held at various sites around Australia.

Environmental groups have a petition running to scrap any plans for a dump at Kimba, calling the process "flawed and divisive."

A final decision will be made by the end by the Government before the end of the year.
