Facebook's Outage Had More Of An Effect On Pornhub Traffic Than We Imagined

If you thought that Facebook's 10-hour outage last week caused people to put down their phones and take a much-needed break from the internet, think again.
Because while the Mark Zuckerberg-owned family of apps - including Instagram and Whatsapp - went off-line for the better part of half a day, Pornhub enjoyed more than just a spike in traffic.
A graph released by the Canadian-based adult entertainment site shows the crazy effect the Facebook outage had on its website, reporting a 19 per cent surge in hourly visits during that time.
But that's not all; the truly addicted among us were clearly in need of a social media fix, as evidenced by a 323 per cent and a 221 per cent increase in searches for "Instagram" and "Facebook" respectively.
Even the searches for particular celebrities had a link to the outage.
"Searches for 'celebrity' were up 72 per cent on March 13th, and many celebrities with strong following on Instagram and Facebook also saw large search increases," a blog post reporting the insights reads.
"Compared to an average day, 'Emrata' was searched 37 per cent more often, 'Ariana Grande' 32 per cent more and 'Shay Mitchell' by 29 per cent."
It's not the first time Pornhub has benefitted from another site being down; last October, YouTube crashed for a little over an hour, resulting in a 21 per cent spike in visits to Pornhub during their "peak evening hours".
