It was one of the great captain/ coach combinations but now the pair who held aloft the 2006 NRL premiership could not be more distant.

Speaking on The Big Breakfast this morning, NRL insider Dobbo confirmed that former Broncos captain Darren Lockyer and South Sydney Coach Wayne Bennett are no longer on speaking terms and haven’t been for quite some time.

Lockyer, whose tenure as a director of the club has been under the microscope for months, has allegedly not spoken to his former mentor since Bennett was sacked as coach of the club in 2018.

In hindsight the fallout alludes to being an early symptom of the larger cultural issues that are currently plaguing Red Hill.

On-field, the Broncos season from hell continued following a 36-26 loss to the Sharks on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. While club have been praised by some for staying in the contest, it was quickly pointed out that they had ten points scored against them in final ten minutes of the game by a side with younger list.

“Once again Brisbane crumbled when there was some pressure”.
