An 89-year-old Hayes man has died following a two vehicle collision which occurred on the Lyell Highway at Lawitta around 9.30am Tuesday Morning.

A white Ford van being driven by a 76-year-old man from Maydena, crossed to the incorrect side of the road when exiting a left hand curve. The van has struck a white Hyundai Getz travelling in the opposite direction. The Getz was being driven by an 89-year-old man from Hayes.

As a result of the crash, the driver of the Getz sustained critical injuries and unfortunately died at the Royal Hobart Hospital just before 3pm. The driver of the van received leg injuries and he was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment, where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

Road and weather conditions were wet at the time of the crash. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash. Information can be relayed to the crash investigators by calling 131 444.
