A three-day snap lockdown could be imminent as a mystery cluster emerges in Melbourne's west.

An emergency meeting has been called after additional cases were announced on Thursday driving the days tally to eight new cases, with six reported for Wednesday and two Thursday.

Two more COVID cases emerge in Victoria

Promising to deliver an update once more information was known, Premier Dan Andrews said meetings were continuing about how to deal with the new outbreak.

"The government's priority is to avoid what is going on in Sydney. We have got to do everything we can to avoid cases getting out of control like they are in Sydney''

Covid Response Commander Jerone Weimar said the two extra cases are connected to the partner of the teacher at Truganina's Al-Taqwa College who tested positive on Wednesday.

Meantime, alarm bells are ringing for Health officials with the source of acquisition from Wednesday's tally is still unknown for three.

As Melbournian's await the impending announcement, Health Minister Martin Foley said a blitz to test in the west is underway with the number of close contacts set to surpass five-to-10,000 within hours, if not days.

Health authorities are currently working under the assumption that all cases are of the Delta strain.
