Far North Queensland is pretty well known as a wedding destination; the Douglas Shire has around 500 a year.

Now the council is backing calls for marriage equality in Australia following a unanimous vote.

Mayor Julia Leu says they support changes to the Marriage Act to ensure all consenting adult couples, irrespective of sex, gender identity or sexuality, have the choice to legally marry.

"We look forward to welcoming same-sex couples celebrating their wedding day," she says.

This isn't the first time they've done this; their vote yesterday was to reaffirm a commitment made 2 years ago.

On 4 November 2014, Council made this proclamation:

We believe that marriage between two loving and committed adults, regardless of gender and sexuality, deserves to be celebrated, validated and acknowledged.

We believe that when people’s love is not recognised by law, it is the law that needs to be changed.

We believe our elected leaders have a responsibility to protect the rights of all citizens.

We believe that Marriage Equality is about human rights and respect.

We believe in celebrating diversity and inclusion in our society.

We, of Douglas Shire Council proclaim our support for Marriage Equality.

It’s time for legislation to support Marriage Equality.

Councillor Leu says they'll provide this advice to the Federal Member for Leichhardt, The Hon Warren Entsch.
