Triple M's Dan Ginnane has given us the inside word on how to win your footy tipping comp. Read below.

So I've been asked to provide 'insight' for people on how to win a footy tipping comp. Gods knows why, given the last tipping comp I won was the Randwick Franklins staff competition in 1998.

Anyway, you've come this far, so you might as well push on. And I suppose I am due.

Look for the genuine 50/50 games

This is where you can make your mark, without having to take ridiculous chances.

Home teams aren't necessarily winning teams

Home advantage is overrated. In most years home teams will win between 50% and 60% of matches. Hardly overwhelming. Good teams win at home. Bad teams don't.

Don't take too many gambles at once

Remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. Unless you are extremely confident about all of your upset picks, be judicious about which underdogs you go with on any given week. Five upsets might look enticing, but if you only get one of them, you'll lose a heap of ground in one weekend.

Never tip against Johnathan Thurston at home

Johnathan Thurston has an impressive record at home. He might drop a game at home on the odd occasion, but chances are every other tipster will also be on the Cowboys. Tipping against him just isn't worth the risk.

So there you have it. Tips that make total sense, and if you're like me, will forget them come round 2.

Good luck.
