Former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett has called out growing concerns over small businesses as the state embarks on a week-long lockdown.

Alarm bells are ringing for many with hospitality operating as take-away only and retail set to take a hit with less people out and about.

Jeff Kennett told Australia Today although its inconvenient, "it is devastating for small businesses".

The former state Premier and current Hawthorn Football Club President wants leaders to stop their war of words and instead work together.

"Having our leader blaming each other does not help the small restaurateur, or small hairdresser who’s now got to close down for another seven days. We must control the virus. We might have to live like this for the next 20 years".
