After half a century in operation, Franco Cozzo has sold his iconic furniture store in Footscray.

The 82-year-old has shipped off his Footscray location on Hopkins St for a handy sum of $6 million, according to a report in Star Weekly.

While his Brunswick store remains, Cozzo said it was time for him to wind back a little bit.

"The people of Footscray have given me great support for many years and I have beautiful memories," he told Star Weekly.

"I’ve been part of the community and Footscray has been part of me, but it’s time to relax a little more."

Cozzo earned fame for his recognisable commercials and grand sales in Brunswick and Footscray, which still air on TV.

His phrases "megalo, megalo" and "grand sale" became entrenched within Melbourne's popular culture.
