Free Fun Science Heads to Chinchilla This Weekend

Enjoy serious science fun at the Chinchilla Cultural Centre this Saturday at World Science Festival Brisbane’s free Community Day.

Learn about the world’s coolest scientists with a new science show called Blasting the Past with Science Steve, who will share the great scientific breakthroughs of the past 150 years, and children’s theatre production Dinosaur Time Machine where attendees can get up close and personal with a life-sized T-Rex.

For the first time in Chinchilla, visitors will be able to enjoy a night under the twinkling night sky at the new Stargazing event planned for Saturday night at Chinchilla State Primary School oval from 6.30pm.

With the assistance of the Columboola Environmental Education Centre, families will be taken on a journey through Chinchilla’s night sky to identify stars and unlock the secrets of our universe through special telescopes provided.

Street Science! is back by popular demand featuring science experiments, hands-on activities, fossils and Queensland Museum scientists from 9am - 4pm.

Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch encouraged Western Downs locals to attend.

“Chinchilla has fully embraced World Science Festival Brisbane and we are delighted to bring these engaging, exciting and educational science events to the town once again,” Minister Enoch said.

“World Science Festival Brisbane continues to grow in Chinchilla, and last year 2400 people, including 300 students attended the programs, which is fantastic.

“The Queensland Government is proud to be supporting World Science Festival Brisbane in 2019 as it once again connects Queenslanders to science,” Minister Enoch said.

Queensland Museum Network CEO Dr Jim Thompson said the Chinchilla Community Day will give locals the opportunity to have fun with science and gain a better insight into the latest scientific advancements shaping our world.

“I encourage residents to come down to the Chinchilla Cultural Centre on Saturday and be inspired and surprised,” Dr Thompson said.

World Science Festival Brisbane in Chinchilla is proudly supported by Community Partner, Shell’s QGC business, through its Future Makers Partnership with Queensland Museum Network.

Production Excellence Manager, Katrina Mullin, said through events such as the World Science Festival Brisbane, students are being encouraged to become inspired by science and the potential that the future can bring. 

“With technological innovation reaching into all corners of life, science continues to play a huge role in the future workforce and highlights the importance of specialised skills to meet these demands,” Ms Mullin said.
