RACE OFF: Storms Force GC600 Organisers To Cancel Race 27

The race is over.

The final day of the Gold Coast 600 has been stopped prematurely due to the severe thunderstorm hitting the Surfers Paradise track, making conditions far too dangerous to drive in.

After two red flags, race director Tim Schenken declared it would not be restarted just before 4.30pm on Sunday

It meant Craig Lowndes and Steve Richards won the Pirtek Enduro Cup, continuing the legend's fairytale end to his Supercars career as a full-time driver.

EARLIER: The third and final day of the Gold Coast 600 has been hit with a massive storm that's been sweeping across the city.

The red flag came out with 65 laps to go, suspending proceedings due to the extreme amount of water on the track, which was expected to significantly shorten the race.

The rain started to fall soon after the race started and it quickly turned vicious, as a severe thunderstorm hit the South-East.

Lightning was seen striking the nearby high-rises, and the torrential rain caused havoc for the co-drivers who scrambled to manage the conditions early.

Jamie Whincup's Red Bull car was a major casualty early on when co-driver Paul Dumbrell lost control on Lap 33, hitting the wall.
