Government U-Turn Approves Ice In Melbourne’s Safe Injecting Room

Ice and methamphetamine will be among drugs permitted inside Melbourne’s new safe injecting rooms in a Victorian state government backflip.
Visitors to the North Richmond facility will be allowed to inject up to three grams of the drug under medical supervision, the Herald Sun reports.
Users will be denied entry if they attempt to bring quantities of drugs exceeding three grams or more, which will be considered a “trafficable amount”.
The change in policy is a complete U-turn on comments made by Mental Health Minister Martin Foley comments last October, which he says comes informed by health and community experts.
“The Government is following the advice of the expert panel, which includes Victoria Police,” Mr Foley said.
“The regulations also align with the safe injecting room in Kings Cross in Sydney, which hasn’t seen one death since it started operating more than fifteen years ago.”
Access to the North Richmond safe injecting room will be based on standard questions inclusive of the visitor’s full name and the list of drugs they wish to take.
