The top tourist destination Hamilton Island is on covid high alert this morning.

Six Melbourne travellers who travelled to The Whitsundays before Victoria's snap lockdown have been identified as close contacts of a positive covid case in Victoria.

A Hamiton Island spokeswoman revealed the family had been isolating in their rooms prior to getting tested with all returning negative results.

As a precaution authorities evacuated the family back to the mainland, two were sent into hotel quarantine and the other four were taken to Prosperine Hospital for further testing. Afterwards, they will be reunited with their family in isolation.

Queensland Health says at this time there is no concern for guests or the wider community.
