Aussies should be applying sunscreen every day, even if we are not headed to the beach this long weekend.

Cancer Council spokesperson Craig Sinclair saying new guidelines published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health are thanks to extreme U-V levels nation-wide.

"The evidence now is really overwhelming, showing that the daily application of sunscreen can have a really significant effect on reducing our skin cancer risk," he told the Triple M Newsroom.

"Particularly for Melanoma, which can fall by 50% - the risk - if people apply sunscreen on a daily basis."

Every year, in Australia skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers, with the majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun.
