Health authorities are reporting an increase in whooping cough cases in the Hunter this year.

There have been 711 confirmed cases of pertussis in the Hunter New England area so far this year, compared to 577 in 2017.

It's prompted a reminder for parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against the nasty illness.

"Whooping cough isn't at epidemic levels, but because it is still around it's very important little ones are protected. The best way to do that is to ensure they are vaccinated on time and people who have close contact with infants to ensure they have had a booster," Dr David Durrheim said.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection which can affect people of any age.

For adolescents and adults, the infection may only cause a persistent cough. However, for babies and young children, whooping cough can be life threatening.
