There are reports that the M5 tolls are here to stay, with it likely that we'll be paying to use the motorway 40 years beyond the planned end date.

According to the Daily Telegraph, WestConnex Minister Stuart Ayres confirmed that the M5 could be until 2066, with the currently-free M5 East also getting a toll system.

This stems from the sale of part of the M5 as a part of the WestConnex project.

Mr Ayres claims that while a current trip from Penrith to the city would cost over $20 using the M7, M2 and other tunnels, the same sort of trip on the West Connex would come in at $8.60.

It is predicted that Sydney will have roughly 10 new tolls implemented in the next decade.
