A staff member at Box Hill Hospital is in a critical condition after being assaulted outside the health facility.
The person behind the violent attack is still on the run.
The employee, a man in his 40s, was struck in a one-punch attack, after an argument broke out between him and another man, who bashed him and fled.
He was reportedly expressing concern about people smoking near the hospital entrance.
He has been transferred to the Alfred hospital in a critical condition.
