Victoria has recorded 28,128 new Covid infections as the state’s hospitalisation numbers continue rise.

There have been another 1,114 people hospitalised with the virus, up from 1,054 recorded yesterday.

There are now 122 people being treated for the virus in intensive care with 35 people on ventilators.

This brings the total number of active cases across Victoria to 237,559.

The latest numbers came from 17,791 PCR tests and 10,337 rapid antigen tests.

While the number of recorded cases is already high, health authorities believe the true number of cases to be much higher due to the testing system’s inability to keep up with demand.

This comes as the close to 100,000 Victorians received word from testing clinics informing them their samples are no longer valid for testing due to the long wait.

As the omicron variant has continued to spread throughout the country, 23 percent of eligible Victorians have received their booster shot.

Health officials believe the third booster shot to be the most effective defence against the Omicron variant as thousands of double vaccinated people fall ill with the latest strain.

Fully vaccinated people are still less likely to fall seriously ill with a majority of hospitalisations identified as unvaccinated.
