Over the weekend Leigh discovered some alarming health statistics showing that the amount of push ups you can do directly correlates as to how fit you are and your chance of heart disease, with men capable of 40+ push-ups sitting at 96% lower risk than those who can do fewer than 10.

The Harvard study, published in JAMA Network Open, analysed the health data of 1104 active male firefighters aged between 21 to 66 over a 10-year period, commencing in 2000. Their push-up capacity and treadmill tolerance were measured, with each participant taking annual physical examinations and health questionnaires.

37 of the 1104 men developed some type of cardiovascular disease during the study period, with all but one occurring in men who completed 40 or fewer push-ups in the baseline exam, with the study resolving that:

“Participants able to complete more than 40 push-ups were associated with a significantly lower risk of incident CVD event risk compared with those completing fewer than 10 push-ups."
