Six-time Bathurst 1000 winner Mark Skaife believes just getting to the last hour of the race places you with a chance of winning Australia's most famous race.

Ahead of the 2017 edition of the Bathurst 1000, 'Skaifey' joined Marto, Ed & Robin and gave his valuable insight into one of the toughest endurance events in motorsport.

“The biggest thing is staying out of trouble until you’ve got an hour to go," Skaife said. Listen to the full audio below.

"So the way to win this race, is buy a ticket to the last hour.

“If you do something dumb early, you’ll lose the race early and year on year you see heaps of those things.

"It’s one of the weirdest races because it's 161 laps but when you start this race you think you're in a 10 lap sprint … they go mad."

Skaife also gave his tip for the weekend's big race.

"Scott McLaughlin has been the benchmark for speed this year," Skaife said.

"He has a French guy called Alex Premat, and they're a combination based on their speed, look like the favourites."
