Physical education at schools is about to get a major shake-up.

The Daily Telegraph reports a trial will be run in the Hunter and elsewhere around the state this year, giving schools scales to weigh kids, splitting up sport classes by gender and putting fitness on report cards.

The aim is to tackle the childhood obesity crisis.

Students would also be given the chance to take up "non-competitive" sports like yoga or jogging.

A new rule will force teachers to ensure students are moving for at least half of the class.

The Physical Activity For Everyone program is designed for students in years 7-9.
