Hurricane Irma Is Roughly The Size Of NSW

Hurricane Irma has caused significant damage in the US, and more information has emerged regarding its ferocity.

While it has been downgraded to a category one storm at the time of writing, there remains a chance of tornadoes, with footage such as this emerging online.

To put Hurricane Irma in proportion, it's larger than NSW and covers half of Europe.

At this stage, it appears as though three people have died as a result of the hurricane.

According to the National Hurricane Advisory's 2am bulletin (local time), maximum sustained winds have decreased to roughly 135 km/hour. According to a statement released by NHA, Hurricane Irma is expected to become a tropical storm over northern Florida later in the day.

The winds extend with a 130km radius from the centre of the hurricane, with tropical-storm-force winds felt up to 665km away.
