Greg Inglis has revealed that Damien Cook started crying upon news that the NRL legend would be retiring, effective immediately.

Inglis, who leaves with 263 NRL games to his name, spoke openly at a press conference on Monday morning, admitting that he hasn't been in the right headspace for some time.

After the initial news, the 32-year-old began joking with the assembled media, laughing that he'd miss the "shit talking" in the locker room, and that he "couldn't look" at Cook when telling him.

"I looked at Damien Cook and he started crying," Inglis saud. "He's a bit of a sook, my mate. It'll be the morale in the sheds I miss the most."

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett also spoke at the press conference, referring to Inglis as "one of the finest players of his generation".

"I'm really pleased for him," Bennett started, adding that Inglis seemed "a lot happier with himself" since coming to the decision.
