Iconic Melbourne Pub The Oxford Scholar - which first opened in 1887 - will close its doors permanently next Friday.

The pub which sits at the northern end of Swanston Street has been an institution for students for decades - particularly those from RMIT which sits across the road.

The Metro Tunnel is under construction outside the front door of the Scholar which staff say "hasn't helped" in keeping the business going.

“Construction meant we lost the outdoor area,” Duty manager Adam told Triple M.

Publican Malcolm Wulf - who has run the pub since 1991 - told the Age back in April he was losing between $3000 and $5000 in drink sales each week as a result of the works that started back in January.

The pub was also used as the Victorian supporters base for the Brisbane Lions.
