Is Your Pooch Lonely?

Stop your dog destroying things

If your dog is used to having kids and family around over the holidays, they might be feeling a little lonely with everyone heading back to school and work and can often take it out on their environment.

Lynne Bodell from Lynne Bodell’s Vet Clinic says that this is fairly common, but there are ways to try and stop the destructive behaviour and protect your belongings.

“Probably the best thing, and good for the kids too, is get them up early and get them for a walk. At the moment the morning are still lovely and burn off some of that energy.”

Dr. Bodell also recommends that dog owners leave toys around for their pets to try and keep them entertained throughout the day if they are being left home along for long periods of time, and these don’t have to be expensive.

“Some of the cheap things I recommend to people are empty plastic water bottles and coke bottles with a little bit of dry spiral pasta in it so it rattles and rolls and they can chase it around”.

She does however warn against hanging toys or treats from the clothes line because this can often lead to encouraging your dog to pull your washing off the line.

While cats are less social than dogs and generally snooze through the day, Dr. Bodell recommends that you give them a little extra attention and wear them out when you’re home from work to ensure they’re getting the interaction they need.
