The AFL have given Melbourne co-captains Jack Viney and Nathan Jones permission to skip the captain's media day on Friday so they can take part in an important pre-round one training session.

The pair will train with their team mates at Casey Fields in a bid to prove their fitness to Simon Goodwin for the club's opening round clash with Port Adelaide.

The training session is expected to involve a lot of match simulation and will give Viney (ankle) and Jones (hamstring) a chance to build on their first and only pre-season hit-out last week.

This news comes after Steven May (suspension), Jay Kennedy-Harris (leg), Mitch Hannan (knee) and Jeff Garlett (shoulder) have all been confirmed to miss the Saturday afternoon clash.

Melbourne ruckman and vice-captain Max Gawn will replace the pair at the MCG for the media appearance.
