Essendon star Joe Daniher raised a few eyebrows on Saturday night.

He slotted his third goal in the second term to put the Bombers in front against the Crows, and made his way toward Adelaide's Rory Atkins.

He jumped over Atkins and ruffled his hair to celebrate, something you don't often see and something that wound up a few fans.

But it wasn't something that wound up Atkins.

He took to Twitter after the match, explaining that he and Daniher were good mates.

As well as Atkins, Essendon coach John Worsfold had Daniher's back.

"They don’t get to play footy together in the backyard anymore like maybe they did when they were young - they now do it on a bit different stage. But they’re mates," he said after the game.

"If people have been offended by it: toughen up."
