Former Australian quick John Hastings says the MCG curator needs to scrap the pitch and start again.
Speaking on Fox Cricket’s coverage before the start of play on day 2 at the G, Hastings said that if they do start again it will be a long process.
“I just think we need to scrap it and start again, start fresh,” Hastings said.
“The problem is it takes three years to then get a pitch up to standard.
“So another 12 months, if we do get another poor [or] average rating next year… [there was] 73,000 here yesterday, to have that taken away from Melbourne and Boxing Day would be an absolute tragedy.”
Last year’s MCG Ashes pitch was rated ‘poor’ by the ICC, garnering the stadium an official warning.
Rules introduced just days after last year’s rating can see grounds stripped of the right to host international cricket if they earn 10 demerit points, with the rating the G copped last year worth three.
