Imported dates have been recalledafter three cases of a rare strain of hepatitis A  were detected in NSW.

Jordan River Dates have been recalled after three people contracted hepatitis A after consuming the Middle Eastern fruit snacks.

The dates are purchased either online or throughout various IGA's and supermarkets across NSW.

1kg and 5kg boxes have been recalled with the importers, Picky Eaters Pty Ltd, citing microbial contamination.

NSW Health and the NSW Food Authority have asked anyone who is still eating the dates to desist immediately with fears of further contamination.

"Throw the remainder of the product in the bin or return the dates to the place of purchases for a full refund," NSW Health said.

The Federal Department of Agriculture have stopped all deliveries of the dates until the matter has been resolved.

The "unique strain" identified by health authorities is reportedly similar to another strain discovered in the UK earlier in the year, which was also sourced from Medjool dates, which were brought in from Jordan.
