A judge has ordered an illegal deer hunter to repeatedly watch the Disney classic Bambi as part of his year-long jail sentence.

David Berry Jnr, from Missouri in the US, was found guilty of illegally taking wildlife in one of the biggest poaching cases in the state's history.

He and two of his family members were arrested in August after taking the heads of the deer they had killed and leaving their bodies behind.

But only Berry Jnr had an unusual addition made to his 12-month sentence; Judge Robert George ordered him to "view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter" during his time in Lawrence County prison.

If anyone happens to have wiped the memory of the particular scene Judge Robert is clearly hoping to have an impact on the accused, we don't blame you.

Here's a refresher.

According to the Springfield News-Leader, the investigation into the spate of killings lasted more then eight months, with Lawrence County Conservation Agent Andy Barnes estimating that "several hundred deer" were taken illegally.

Berry Jnr was also sentenced to 120 days in Barton County prison for violation of a felony firearms probation, and has had his hunting privileges revoked for life.
