Looks like trams will soon be taking passengers south to Burleigh Heads, regardless of who gets voted in at the next Federal Election.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has already committed $112 million to extend the light rail if his party is re-elected in May, and now Bill Shorten is matching that promise.

The Labor leader was set to visit the Gold Coast on Monday, to commit to funding the next stage of the development.

Labor Senator Murray Watt said Stage 3a of the project would be a big win for locals.

"We expect it will create about 2,500 jobs so it's great for Gold Coast tourism, great for Gold Coast residents but it's also great for Gold Coast the economy.

"No matter who wins the next Federal Election, the light rail will extend to Burleigh Heads," he said.
