Soldier On chairman Lieutenant General Peter Leahy AC has explained what the Taliban seizing control of Kabul means for our Australian troops as they prepare to evacuate Afghanistan.

"It's been stunning. I think bonkers is a good word," he explained on Molloy on Wednesday afternoon.

"Just a couple of days ago, we were told it'd be 90 days before they got into Kabul. Well, they seem to have got there in 90 hours."

Leahy said there was a "bonza effort" to ensure every Australian can get out of the country.

"I think we need to be careful," he said.

"We've heard some modifying things, we've heard some reasonable things. But we're going to see over the next six or more months the proof in the pudding, because frankly these blokes have got bad form, and we do need to think about what are they up to and how are the people of Afghanistan going to go in the future.

"But right now, how are we going to get our people out?"
