A former Biosecurity Queensland officer-turned-whistle blower believes that over $410m may have been wasted in the war on fire ants.

The whistle-blower known only as ‘Jamie’ told The Big Breakfast with Marto, Robin and Nick Cody that the Ipswich, Greenbank, Springfield Lakes, Springfield, Ripley Gatton and Gleneagle areas are all effected, and that current helicopter reconnaissance being used to identify nests is not working.

Fire ants were first detected in the Brisbane area in February 2001. According to the Queensland Government website the ants native to South America ‘pose a serious social, economic and environmental threat’ and all sightings should be immediately reported to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23
