Brian Taylor has clarified how he’ll call Orazio Fantasia in the future after Bruce McAvaney and Basil Zempilas pronounced his surname “Fan-ta-see-ah” last night.
LISTEN HERE:
Essendon captain Dyson Heppell spoke to Channel 7 commentator Hamish McLachlan pregame and clarified Orazio’s personal preference for pronunciation at about 3:37 in this video:
But BT said he’ll stick with the pronunciation he knows well.
“We don’t pronounce Italian names in Australia in the full Italian way,” he said.
“We pronounce it with the Australianism in it, and that’s how we’ll continue to do it.”
Orazio himself explained in August last year that the Fan-ta-see-ah pronunciation is correct but that he didn't mind the mispronunciations as he'd grown up with them:
“I’ve had it all through high school and primary,” Fantasia said.
“No one can say it properly so it’s just normal for me now.”
