Triple M's Luke Darcy has hit out at the AFL for the free kick paid against Jeremy Howe for having his studs up in a marking contest.

Howe took a screamer over Melbourne's Tom McDonald yesterday, only for the decision to be paid a free kick for having his boot in McDonald's back.

Darce, speaking on Triple M's Hot Breakfast on Tuesday morning, was not happy with the verdict.

“The AFL, I’m told behind the scenes, have ticked that off and says it’s the right free kick. If they do that, they’re going to lose part of the game that is the most unique and brilliant part of the game," he told Triple M.

"For once at AFL House, put your hand up and say ‘no, that isn’t why we’ve got that rule’."

He said the AFL need to take ownership of this one and try to protect the specky.

“We need to try and protect that in the game," he said.

"They’re amazing, the AFL. They’ve got this inability to actually admit they’ve got something wrong.

"That is wrong. It is wrong in every sense of the word. Put your hand up and get that right.”
