Recent research from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the more than 55,000 vehicles were stolen in Australia in the last financial year, an increase of about 3000 over the previous year.

Victoria was in first place with almost 13,000 vehicles going missing. This was followed by Queensland, which recorded 11,000 thefts. NSW recorded the lowest rate of car theft out of the major cities, the tally of 96,000 working out to one in 537.
