The Reds have made a captaincy shock by announcing young flanker Liam Wright as their skipper for the 2020 Season.

Coach Brad Thorn made the surprise announcement at a press conference at Suncorp Stadium this morning.

Wright, 22, finished runner-up to the now-departed Samu Kerevi in last year’s Pilecki Medal, awarded to the best Reds player. The award capped off an impressive season that saw him not only play but start in every game of season 2019.

“It’s a huge honour to be named as captain. Having the chance to lead this team of Queenslanders is a massive privilege and very special.” Wright told reporters this morning.

Reds head coach Brad Thorn was full of praise for the young leader “He deserves his chance to lead Queensland this season...He’s a genuine and intelligent guy. He has the respect of the playing group. Liam’s the type of player that others want to play for”

The coach is no stranger to Wright’s leadership, Wright having captained the Queeensland U20s under Thorn in 2017.

“…He’s captained both the Queensland U20s and Queensland Country in the NRC. I’m sure he will carry those same leadership qualities into the 2020 Super Rugby season as captain of Queensland”.
