It truly shows that in these hot, dry & windy conditions that nowhere is safe from bushfires.

On Saturday afternoon a dry lightning strike caused a blaze at Brisbane’s idyllic Moreton Island, just outside of the town of Cowan Cowan. A shift in winds saw the blaze avoid the town and head north towards Bulwer on the north-west tip of the island.

Bulwer, of course, home to Marto’s famous “fibro shack” that he’s been working on for the past twenty years.

This morning The Big Breakfast checked in with Marto’s long-term friend and Moreton Island resident, Don, for and update on the changing conditions.

Listen below

“It was pretty serious mate…it was creeping up the wetland so by the time the Southerly came it was only half a k from the town” Don told Marto, Margaux & Nick Cody.

Residents who have evacuated their homes have been given temporary accommodation  an at Tangalooma resort on the western face of the Island.

The most recent QFES update as of 2:30pm (AEST) describes conditions on Moreton Island as “dangerous and unpredictable”
